Jesse Calvin Sumner, age 83, of Cadiz, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Mercy Health – Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.

Born October 2, 1940, in Trigg County, he was the son of the late William Odell and Ruby (Cameron) Sumner.

Jesse began working at Hoover Ball and Bearing Co., which would later become Johnson Controls, in 1966, shortly after the plant opened. A stalwart employee, he retired in 2006 after 40 years of dedicated service as a press operator.

A faithful member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Jesse served many years as a trustee and as a member of the church choir. His involvement in his community was also evident through the role he played in Woodmen Life, Cadiz Chapter 20, an organization he devoted himself to for 25 years as its treasurer. His community spirit was further exemplified by the countless hours he spent coaching summer youth baseball, teaching kids teamwork, respect, and love of the game.

Jesse enjoyed spending time outdoors, taking great care of his yard, and growing prized vegetables in his garden. Above all, he enjoyed the company of his family. He was a devoted husband, father, Papaw and Granddaddy Jesse.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William "Bill" Sumner and Donald Ray Sumner, and two sisters, Carolyn Sumner and Marilyn Hart.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Ann Hughes Sumner, to whom he was married for nearly 63 years; his children, Pam Freeman (Gary) and David Lee Sumner, both of Cadiz; five grandchildren, Leah O'Neil (Patrick), Josh Freeman (Jennifer), Brittany Sumner, Kyle Freeman (Stacia), and Morgan Sumner; six great-grandchildren, Olivia Washington, Weston Freeman, Gracie Freeman, Kenslie Freeman, Gage Freeman, and Kora Freeman, and five step-great-grandchildren, Andrew Sharp, Brooklyn Sharp, Chelsea Sharp, Luke Stokes, and Ellie Stokes; and two brothers, Robert "Bob" Sumner of Cadiz and Charlie Sumner of Chicago Heights, Ill.
