A Madisonville man has been charged with attempted murder after he reportedly assaulted his mother early Sunday morning.
Madisonville police report officers were dispatched to a home in the 900 block of Mae Von Drive shortly after 2:00 a.m. in reference to a medical emergency. Upon arrival, officers determined an assault had occurred after finding the female victim had a swollen left eye and pain in her left hand.
According to police, the victim told officers her son, 31-year old Nathaniel Spears attacked her while she was sleeping and when she awoke he was straddling her on her bed and holding a knife. During the altercation, the victim stated she was able to fight the knife away from her son but he continued to assault her.
Police said the victim was transported by ambulance to Baptist Health Madisonville for treatment of injuries.
Spears was arrested and lodged in the Hopkins County Jail charged with attempted murder — domestic violence and second-degree strangulation.
Madisonville police say the investigation is ongoing.
