Governor Beshear Directs Flags be Lowered to Half-Staff

Governor Andy Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff to honor the life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis.

This falls in accordance with orders issued today by President Donald Trump.

Beshear’s office says flags at all state office buildings should be lowered to half-staff immediately and remain so through sunset Saturday. Beshear also encourages individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the Commonwealth to join in this tribute.

Congressman Lewis served as a U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district for 17 terms. Lewis made an early mark as a young leader of the 1960s civil rights struggle, helping to lead the 1963 March on Washington D.C., suffering wounds from a police beating in Selma, Alabama in 1965, and enduring dozens of arrests.
