Officials with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are stressing boater safety through the holiday weekend.

The department says they are joining area law enforcement agencies across the nation for Operation Dry Water through the Fourth of July weekend. Operation Dry Water is a national campaign designed to educate the public about the danger of boating while impaired. Officials add Kentucky will increase its law enforcement presence around lakes and rivers through July 5 as a reminder to not boat under the influence.

Under a law enacted in 2019, officers can make an arrest to anyone boating under the influence based on probable cause when an accident has caused property damage or physical injury. Anyone arrested for boating under the influence may be subject to 24 hours detention for a first offense and 48 hours for a second.
