Hopkinsville Community College’s Upward Bound program has been awarded a supplemental, federal grant aimed toward enhancing STEM activities. HCC officials say the $40,000 grant is the maximum amount of funds allotted to programs that sent in proposals interested in improving science, technology, engineering, and math offerings for their high-school-aged participants.
HCC Upward Bound Educational Advisor Jewel Lynch says in a release the supplemental grant would not have been as creative and effective without the contributions of HCC personnel that provided them with ideas, plans, and costs. She adds they really came up with some interesting activities.
HCC officials say the STEM funding will allow students to take field trips to places such as Toyota of Kentucky and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Other activities include building and programming a weather station, and a hands-on NASA Balloon Satellite Workshop. Officials note these opportunities will introduce students to STEM academic and career fields.
HCC Upward Bound Academic Coordinator Joe Leavell explains the grant will allow students to travel outside of Hopkinsville and also assist with HCC faculty hosting workshops and sharing their expertise in high-demand areas. He adds the grant funds, combined with these professional resources will provide new and extra opportunities for their students.
