Candidates For Commonwealth’s Attorney Featured At Forum

With the general election only a week away, two familiar adversaries for commonwealth’s attorney were featured during a Christian County League of Women Voters Forum Tuesday night and discussed several topics, including the effectiveness of the prosecutor.

When asked how the community should evaluate the effectiveness of the commonwealth’s attorney, Democratic incumbent Lynn Pryor, who is seeking her third six-year term, says it’s not about the number of convictions — it’s about justice for all.

However, Republican challenger and defense attorney Rick Boling who served one term as Commonwealth’s Attorney and was defeated by Pryor in 2006, disagreed and believes effectiveness is based on conviction rates and winning trials.

During her rebuttal, Pryor stated it’s about the victim’s having their day in court.

Boling stated it’s wasting taxpayer’s money if you’re prosecuting cases you can’t win.

If reelected, Pryor stated during closing remarks she will continue to work as hard as she has for the past twelve years.

Boling said it’s time for a change, he believes in term limits and two six-year terms are enough. He added Christian County needs fresh ideas and positive results.

The candidates also discussed several other topics, including the opioid epidemic, when a special prosecutor should be used in a case, the role of a victim when prosecuting a case, and how to determine which cases go to trial or resolved by a plea agreement.
