Gov. Beshear Provides Updates on Kentucky’s Memorial Day Tornado Response

Governor Andy Beshear provided an update on the state’s response to the severe storms and tornadoes that swept across Kentucky over Memorial Day weekend.

During his Team Kentucky Update, Beshear shared the recent announcement from the National Weather Service regarding the combined tornadoes’ path on May 26, which he stated resulted in a record-shattering total for the region.

click to download audioAccording to Beshear, the day after the storm, he, along with Kentucky Emergency Management Director Eric Gibson and leaders from the Kentucky National Guard, visited several affected areas that were impacted.

click to download audioHe mentioned that Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park promptly responded by opening their doors just hours after the event, providing shelter for the survivors.

Beshear noted that staff from Kentucky Emergency Management and FEMA have already started assessing damages in many affected counties to determine if the event will qualify for a federal declaration, which he believes will certainly be eligible for public assistance. He also thinks it is likely to qualify for individual assistance, but as of Thursday, Beshear said the application has not been submitted because all the necessary information has yet to be collected.
