If there were any graduating groups built for adversity, America’s Class of 2024 should be on the list.
A global pandemic greeted them as they entered high school, and a bustling world now awaits them.
Hopkinsville High School learned the best laid plans don’t always work late Friday afternoon at The Stadium of Champions, when — moments after beloved Christian County Public Schools pillar Nicole Poindexter finished her comforting words of encouragement — the skies opened, and the rains ruined printed programs, caps and gowns, perfect hair and makeup, and sent several folks scrambling for cover.
And yet, it also washed away some happy tears of children moving to adulthood.
Selected by the class body to deliver remarks, Poindexter reflected on the growth of the classmates, who in early years found ire in being called “fake.”
She also vividly remembered three catchphrases used by this class in casual conversation.
This next chapter, she said, requires consistent use, and the action, of three simple words.
Stand. Step. Walk.
But, fittingly, she also brought some family comedy to the stage.
Superintendent Chris Bentzel twice brought forth confirmation of this year’s graduates.
Cindy Campbell, Hopkinsville High School principal, offered forth the top 10 students from the class.
Also a captain of the Tigers football team, Devin Coleman offered benediction and invocation.
HHS had more than 30 honors graduates this year.
