Set for May 17-23, the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) will hold a series of commemorative ceremonies, competitions and demonstrations as part of its annual “Week of the Eagles” celebration.

The events, of course, lead up to Memorial Day Weekend, and as always are designed to foster unit pride and bolster cohesion among Screaming Eagle soldiers and the Fort Campbell veteran community with its Gold Star families.

First held in 1974, “Week of the Eagles” honors and embraces the legacy and heritage of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and involves both veterans and current soldiers of the division.

The 101st was activated on Aug. 16, 1942, at Claiborne, Louisiana. Its first Commanding General, Maj. Gen. William C. Lee, noted the division had no history, but it had a “rendezvous with destiny.”

Major events during this week include the boot display ceremony commemorating the division’s fallen soldiers, the air assault demonstration showcasing the division’s capabilities, the mass reenlistment ceremony highlighting our soldiers’ commitment to continued service, and the Memorial Day ceremony honoring those who have given their lives in defense of the nation.
