A pair of Trigg County students were selected for the Legislative Page Program, and spent February 28 in Frankfort working in the State Capitol.

Trigg County High School sophomore Mabry Alexander and Trigg County Middle School eighth grader Lexie Valentine got a chance to tour facilities and serve as a page in the House for Representative Mary Beth Imes of Calloway and Trigg counties — embracing a positive experience and “first-hand view” of how state government operates.

Sponsored by the Family Resource Youth Services Coalition of Kentucky, this is a non-profit outreach that provides legislative advocacy and supports Family Resource and Youth Service Center coordinators and staff.

Meanwhile, the Legislative Page program is tasked with giving students the opportunity to observe lawmakers in Frankfort, while pulling the curtain back on the legislative process. Alexander and Valentine were nominated to the program by Laura Shelton, Horizon Youth Services Center Coordinator.

In an extended sense, pages are typically secondary school or university students who serve from one week to a year — running errands, delivering coffee, answering telephones, or assisting speakers with visual aids. They are also responsible for delivering messages to the House and Senate officials, and they get to observe key events in political history.
