Trigg Schools Reflects On Leadership Class, Pay Cells And SEEK Funding

During Thursday night’s Trigg County Public Schools Board of Education session, Superintendent Bill Thorpe’s report came with three important prongs.

One, a successful visit to the district from the Trigg County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Class.

Two, a simplification of the district’s pay scale charts.

And three, the continued push for the improvement of the SEEK formula during the current Kentucky General Assembly.

Thorpe said there was deep discussions surrounding the functions of the school, as well as tours of all the campus parts, and an intimate luncheon with most of the district’s top staffers.

As far as pay scales are concerned, Thorpe noted that he and Chief Finance Officer Holly Greene have been trying to devise a much more readable, palatable chart — one that clearly defines years of pay increases for career lines on the campus.

He offered an example.

Greene said she inherited the pay rubric upon her employment, while long-term board member and former teacher Charlene Sheehan added the schedule had become a mess.

With SEEK, Thorpe said he has contacted Frankfort legislators by email once again, in order to defend Trigg County’s negative net position with the current formula — especially in year two.

Board Attorney Jack Lackey Jr. also noted that there has to be some harmony between school districts, the Kentucky Department of Education and the bicameral state government.

And that there needs to be increased communication between all parties.

In other school news:

— Trigg County’s new co-curricular facility and CTE remodel continues to intrigue and entice leadership from surrounding school districts.

Thorpe and Director of Operations Matt Ladd both confirmed that visits have only continued, and that contingents from Graves, Union, Christian and Caldwell counties have now toured the facilities.

— Prior to the meeting, board members reviewed presentations from a number of undisclosed insurance pitches, and will make their decision at a later date. A renewal of student accident insurance, through Roberts Insurance in Richmond, was unanimously approved with no change in costs.

This does include an increase of the physical therapy limit for students who need it, up from $1,000 to $1,500.
