HFD Offers Tips for Overcoming Extreme Cold Weather Inside and Out

With Temperatures and wind chills expected to reach dramatic lows this week, safety has to be at the forefront of any activity conducted both inside and out.

Just remember the four P’s when the weather turns extremely cold — people, pets, plants, and pipes.

Captain Payton Rogers with the Hopkinsville Fire Department said time spent outdoors needs to be kept brief and to check on elderly people and anyone who lives alone during the cold weather.

click to download audioRogers also advised to bring your pets inside and make sure any pet left outside has an enclosed shelter. Bring any potted plants inside and cover sensitive plants. Cover any exposed outside pipes and allow water to drip from indoor faucets.

Rogers also reminds people to never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat their home and never use propane or kerosene inside.

click to download audioHe also reminds you to remove snow from vents for dryers and other natural gas equipment. Blocked vents for dryers and other gas appliances can lead to a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide gas.
