The City of Hopkinsville is taking bids for the demolition of Walnut Street Stadium to make for room for an expansion of the Boys and Girls Club.

Hopkinsville Mayor J. R. Knight made the announcement on WHVO’s Hoptown This Morning Tuesday, citing the deteriorating condition of the stadium.

Mayor Knight says the stadium has become a safety hazard.

He says the demolition will make room for an additional building at the Boys and Girls Club of Hopkinsville.

Mayor Knight says they will be preserving the legacy of Walnut Street Stadium in the new Boys and Girls Club Building.

Walnut Street Stadium, formerly known as Tiger Stadium, was constructed in 1937 on the campus of what was then Hopkinsville High School. According to the school website Hopkinsville High School was located at the site of the stadium, located between Central Avenue and Stanley Street, from 1912 until the new Hopkinsville High School was constructed on Koffman Drive and opened in 1963.
