For more than two decades, the Hopkinsville “Turkey Trot” Thanksgiving 5K has brought out families and friends alike — looking to start the holiday off in a bright, fun way.
Thursday morning’s 22nd “running” of it was no different, as hundreds took on the challenge of 3.1 miles — many of them festively dressed for the non-timed race.
Free for all participants, WHVO’s Kim Allen caught up with a couple of Indian Hills Elementary students — ready for a good time.
Their PE Teacher, Marshall Adcock, said he’s spent years encouraging anyone to come out for the jog.
Parks & Recreation Superintendent Toby Hudson has only missed one of the 22 events, and the pre-dinner plod has only gotten larger each successive year.
While pre-registration earned visitors a free “Strut Your Stuffin’” T-shirt, leftovers were sold Thursday morning — with all extra proceeds going to the Greenway Rail Trail and its continued maintenance and improvement.
The race started on South Main Street, with a rolling barricade provided by the Hopkinsville Police Department — going from 11th Street to South Wooldridge, and from South Wooldridge to South Main Street and Faulkner Drive.
Several other holiday events remain on the horizon in Hopkinsville: the tree-lighting is planned for December 8, the HES Night Christmas Parade is December 9, and there’s still potential for Santa’s Arrival, just before the big night.
