Bluegrass On Beshear Embraces Decade Of Support

From noon until 6 PM this Saturday, Lake Beshear near Dawson Springs will play host to the sounds of the Bright Life Farms Choir, the South Union Band, Chris Rogers & KY Troubadours, Classy And Grassy, Alonzo Pennington and the Lighthouse Vocal Band.

All for a good reason. All for a good cause.

It’s the 10th Annual “Bluegrass on Beshear. And it’s quaintly located at 307 Island Cove Lane.

This is the home of Jeff and Laura Smith, who a decade ago decided to gather some resources and showcase west Kentucky’s “hidden gem” — all while raising money for a cause in which they believe: “Pickin’ Life Project.” It’s a foundation that supports Alpha Pregnancy Care Center in Hopkinsville, Door of Hope in Madisonville, and Hope Clinic in Marshall and Lyon counties.

For the Smiths, this has been a long trek to make it to this point.

While the music, food and beverages begin at noon, the Smiths note their grounds open at 11 AM. A parking crew will help visitors take people — and their lawn chairs and coolers — down closer to the venue — then return them back when they’re ready to leave.

Though the tunes are free, a “supremely popular” raffle will offer 15 winners a chance at prizes like $500 cash and two tickets to the highly-anticipated Kentucky-Louisville football game.

The fundraiser picked up $2,600 in its first year. But in the eight since, more than $153,000 total has been collected for the women’s health agencies, and last year alone visitors rallied for more than $38,000.

According to bluegrassonbeshear.com, an unnamed local support has pledged to match donations up to $12,000, so a donation of any size will be doubled. Furthermore, all proceeds from food and beverages, as well as “Bluegrass on Beshear” gear and raffle tickets go back to the programs.

In describing Alpha Pregnancy Care Center’s efforts, the Smiths elaborated on just the kinds of services these donations help make possible.

The wall-to-wall music festival is four miles southwest of Dawson Springs off Hwy. 672.
