Phoenix Building Demolition Likely To Begin Next Week

The demolition process for the Phoenix Building in downtown Hopkinsville will likely begin next week.

The news came during the Wednesday morning session of the civil division of Christian County Circuit Court before Judge Andrew Self, who denied a request for a time extension to assist in salvage purposes.

According to court documents, demolition is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 7, for the building located at 814-816 S. Main and 106-110 E. 9th Street.

The Phoenix Building was condemned by the Hopkinsville Fire Department in mid-January after a structural engineer determined the building was unsafe to enter. The building was built in 1812, according to city government and tourism officials. It served as an inn and bank in the 1800s and was the Woods Drug Store from 1910 to 1953. The building also housed Cassity’s Kiddie Corner and WKOA Radio.
