Federal Grant Could Provide Todd County Schools With Electric Buses

The Todd County School District is currently in the second round of applications for an Environmental Protection Agency competitive federal grant that would provide the district with electric school buses.

Superintendent Mark Thomas says if awarded, the grant could supply up to six or seven electric vehicles.

If selected, the district would receive around $2.8 million of funding, which would cover the cost of all electric buses and their charging stations.

The grant will be awarded sometime between October and November of this year. Because of supply chain issues, building time has increased, but Thomas says he hopes to have electric buses doing daily routes by November of 2024 if Todd County is chosen.

He adds plans are currently underway for two electric vehicle factories within 150 miles of Elkton to be built.

In the future, Thomas says he hopes to continue the transition to electric buses in the district.

Christian and Trigg Counties were two of several school systems across the nation to be awarded the same grant last year.
