Area Teachers Among 2022-23 KBE Award Winners

Some area teachers were among 67 recognized by the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) last week.

The KBE honored educators who received awards throughout the school year, because of their talent and passion for professional growth and perfecting their craft.

Local teachers honored included:

* Victoria Mohon, a teacher at Christian County High School, was named a 2023 Valvoline Teacher Achievement award winner.

* Amanda Guzik, of Lyon County High School, won the Kentucky Association for Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year award.

* Kelly Gates, from Pride Elementary School in Hopkins County, was named the 2023 Kentucky Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

* Brian Welch, of Madisonville North Hopkins High School, received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.

* Mandy Perez, from Crittenden County Middle School, received two awards, the 2023 Kentucky Middle School Teacher of the Year and the 2023 Kentucky Teacher of the Year.

Following the award reception, 36 of the winners attended a luncheon. During that luncheon, they participated in breakout sessions where they were asked questions by KBE on how they can help with teacher and educator retention, working conditions, and how they can make the teaching profession more desirable, among others.
