Trigg School Board Observing Next Steps On Nickel Tax

Officials with the Trigg County Public Schools are adhering to a “wait-and-see” approach, following the delivery of a letter from County Clerk Carmen Finley — notifying the district of a local option petition, seeking a vote for the recallable nickel tax.

Superintendent Bill Thorpe said nary an action in any direction can be taken until Finley and her staff find the signatures conclusive or questionable.

Thorpe noted much more can go into motion, once Finley’s efforts are complete.

Thorpe also said he feels like there’s plenty of time to have appropriate and diligent conversations about the next steps. If the signatures check out and Trigg County Circuit Court need not get involved, then there’s still a possibility this measure makes it on the May Primary.

If it doesn’t, it’ll either be available on the November General, or the board could entirely opt to rescind its move altogether.

Whatever the decision, Thorpe, Trigg’s school board and surrounding officials will have at the very least from February until May for discussion and outreach.

Once Finley’s numbers are crunched, Thorpe said the district will convene to discuss the next steps.

Trigg County Public Schools next convenes for its regularly-scheduled board meeting at 6 PM Thursday, January 26.
