First Lady Beshear Opens Toy Drive For East Kentucky

Following west Kentucky’s horrific bout with severe weather last December, First Lady Britainy Beshear initiated a Christmas toy drive — thinking it would help families regroup after destruction.

It did that and more, as families gathered, shopped freely and embraced the holiday, thanks to thousands upon thousands of donations from across the world.

During Thursday’s “Team Kentucky” update, Beshear once again put out the call for toys — this time for eastern Kentucky, which in July saw 13 of its counties experience sweeping torrential rains and flooding that claimed lives, forced rescues and destroyed millions of dollars in property.

Beshear’s toy drive is for all ages — infants to teens — and she’s urging anyone wishing to partake can buy books, games, toys, arts & crafts, stuffed animals and more to brighten the winter holidays.

Toys can be mailed in to Jenny Wiley State Park at 75 Theatre Court, Prestonsburg, Kentucky 41653, but Beshear noted there’s an even better way to deliver toys in west Kentucky.

Donations must come unwrapped, Beshear added, because families and friends will have the opportunity to walk through mountains of gifts in holiday bazaars — simply selecting the gift that works for them.

The deadline for donations is December 14.
