Christian Fiscal Court Enters Into $200K FAA Grant

An updated plan for the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport will soon be addressed.

During Tuesday’s Christian County Fiscal Court meeting, magistrates unanimously approved to enter into a $201,600 grant application with the Federal Aviation Administration — which will require a 5% match from both the city and county.

In spending roughly $20,000, Darrell Gustafson — magistrate and county representative for the airport board — said the municipality would then unlock more than $180,000 in federal dollars, which would in turn be used to develop the facility’s 5-year plan.

Part of this plan — more hangars.

Established in 1952, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport at 300 Memorial Field Drive has a 5,500-foot runway that’s 100 feet wide and can support planes between 43,500 and 62,000 pounds. It serves not only Christian County, but Cadiz, Trenton, Fort Campbell, Paducah and Clarksville, and has long been one of the Ohio Valley’s more prominent refueling stations.

In other fiscal court news:

— Magistrates unanimously approved the 2022-23 fiscal year tax ordinance on second reading, with little change or fanfare.

— Magistrate Mark Cansler reminded everyone that Jeffers Bend in Hopkinsville will be hosting its annual NatureFest, set for 1-5 PM this Saturday.

— Bro. Jesse Brown, of Casky Baptist Church, gave a rare invocation to the fiscal court Tuesday, using Matthew, Chapter 20 as a base for his discussion.

Brown said leadership should resemble the life of a servant.
