Nelson Files As Write-In Candidate For Vacant District Judge Seat

Another write-in candidate has filed to run for the 56th Judicial Division II District Court Judge seat.

The Kentucky Secretary of State’s website shows that Jennifer Nelson filed on August 26th. Nelson will face attorney Matt Schalk who filed as a write-in candidate for the seat on July 6th.

Schalk withdrew from the Division I District Judge race and declared his intent to file as a write-in candidate for the Division II seat. Schalk said at the time he made the decision after Judge Natalie White withdrew from the race for the Division II District Court Judge seat. Judge White filed to run for the newly created circuit judge seat after action earlier this year by the General Assembly.

In the May primary election, Schalk and Nelson ran against attorney Brandon Knoth in the Division I District Court Judge race. Knoth defeated the two candidates and within a few days after his win, Governor Andy Beshear appointed him to replace Judge Jamus Redd who was appointed as the Division I Circuit Court Judge. That seat was vacated when Judge Woody Woodall retired at the end of January.

Write-in candidates have until October 28 to file to run in the general election on Tuesday, November 8th.
