‘Hometown Heroes’ Deadline Is April 15 In Cadiz

A vacation stop for Trigg County magistrate Mike Wright — and the area’s return to health, in general — have finally brought the “Hometown Heroes” project from ideas to fruition.

Looking to both honor and recognize Cadiz-Trigg County servicemen and women and their families who have served in any branch of the military, large 18” x 45” banners are being drafted and ordered to celebrate living and deceased honorably discharged veterans.

Along with his wife, Penny, and his youngest son, Zeke, Wright was making his way up through the northeast to places like Bar Harbor, Maine, Cooperstown and upstate New York a couple of years ago — when they stumbled upon the small town of Moriah.

With COVID concerns much more muted, Cadiz City Hall is open and accepting applications for these banners to be made. Due by April 15, the cost is $50, and a few specifications must be met:

— Verification of service is required.
— Locations for banners will be randomly selected along Pennyrile Electric poles, and specific locations cannot be requested.
— Banners for living individuals must have signed permission from the individual for their image to be used.
— Families may request that the banner be given to the family at any time. When current banners are retired, they may be picked up at City Hall.
— A photograph of the individual must be provided prior to the banner’s creation, and high-resolution .jpg is preferred.

Once processed and ordered, Cadiz On Main Director Ryan Clark said the plan is to have the banners up by Flag Day, June 14.

Clark said the addition of these banners, particularly downtown, should increase foot traffic — and he noted it’s been a special process seeing some folks come in with their old war photos.

If there’s enough who sign up for the project, Wright added the banners could go all the way out through town — and all the way out to Montgomery.

The banners will be stored by the City of Cadiz, and Clark there will be a concerted effort to make this an annual event, with the ability to add banners as the support continues.

Should someone need an application electronically, Clark can be contacted by email at onmain@cityofcadiz.com, or by phone at (270) 522-8244.
