Judge Denies Spikes’ Motion to Recuse Himself from Hearing Case

The Hopkinsville man charged with murder in connection to a shooting on Clearman Court in December saw his motion for a new judge denied Wednesday morning.

49-year-old Bobby Spikes, who had dual addresses of Hopkinsville and Princeton, is charged with the December 9 murder of Stanley Bussell.

During an investigation into the shooting death of 34-year old Candice Marcel of Hopkinsville, police said they found the body of Bussell at Marcel’s home on Clearman Court. Bussell had died as the result of a gunshot wound.

State police said Marcel was found dead in the passenger seat of a car that was discovered by a Trigg County Sheriff’s Deputy while on patrol on Cerulean Road on December 9. An autopsy determined Marcel died of a single gunshot wound.

Police have said Bussell was lured by a female coworker, identified by state police as Marcel, to her residence where he was shot in the head. The report said Spikes was the boyfriend of Marcel and was known to frequent her residence.

During Wednesday’s court hearing, Spikes asked Chief Circuit Judge John Atkins to recuse himself from presiding over the case because Atkins had prosecuted Spikes as Commonwealth’s Attorney over two decades ago.

click to download audioCourt records indicated Spikes had been charged with robbery, trafficking in a controlled substance, and being a persistent felony offender in Christian County in the mid-1990s.

Spikes remains lodged in the Christian County Jail with a cash bond of $500,000.
