Man Charged With Assaulting Law Enforcement K9

A Clarksville man was charged with assault on a service animal after a report of a burglary in progress on Norman Dale Drive in Hopkinsville Sunday morning.

Hopkinsville Police say they were called to the area for a burglary in progress and could see 38-year-old Wilford Smith inside the home.

He reportedly would not respond to the officer’s request for him to come outside and a K9 with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office was sent into the home.

Police say Smith grab the dog by its lower and top jaw with his hands and started spreading his mouth apart. Smith was reportedly kicked in the shoulder and punched by law enforcement to get him to release the dog.

Smith was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary, resisting arrest, and second-degree assault on a service animal.
