Several Candidates File To Run In 2022 Christian County Elections

Wednesday’s first filing day for the 2022 election cycle saw several people officially file paperwork to run for a seat on Christian County Fiscal Court.

According to the clerk’s office, two incumbents have filed the paperwork to run in the 2022 primary election. District 6 Magistrate Phillip Peterson and District 3 Magistrate Mark Cansler both filed Wednesday. Peterson is a Republican and Cansler is a Democrat.

Republican George Barnett has also filed to run in District 3.

Mike Walker, who currently serves on the Christian County School Board, has filed to run for fiscal court as a Republican in District 7. That seat is currently held by Republican Jerry Gilliam who has announced he will seek the office of judge-executive.

Sheriff Tyler DeArmond is seeking re-election on the Republican ticket.

And James Knight Jr. has filed to run for mayor of Hopkinsville in the Republican primary.

Candidates have until January 7 to file for the primary election. The filing deadline for non-partisan elections such as school board and city council is June 7.

At the state level, Republican Mary Beth Imes has filed to seek another term as the 5th District state representative in Trigg and Calloway counties.

Democrat Charles Booker, who narrowly lost a primary election against Amy McGrath in the U.S. Senator’s race against Mitch McConnell two years ago has filed to run against Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul.

Elsewhere, David Sharp of Madisonville has filed to run in the Republican primary for the U.S. representative seat held by James Comer.

Walker is a lifelong resident of Hopkinsville, a graduate of Hopkinsville High School and a graduate of Murray State University.

Married to his wife, Teresa Phillips, for 35 years, Walker has two sons and is a retiree of the Hopkinsville Fire Department after 20 years of service and of the State’s Drug Court Program after 16 years of service.

He’s been an elected member of the Christian County School Board since 2020 and has been an active member of the Second Baptist Church for five decades. He serves on the executive committee and is the ward chairman of the Christian County Republican Party.
