Officials with Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation announced Thursday the annual Special Needs Christmas dance, typically held at the Thomas Street Recreation Center in Hopkinsville, has been canceled for this year due to COVID concerns.
Parks & Rec spokeswoman Taylor Duke says the decision was made following consultation with Trace Industries in Hopkinsville where a large percentage of the dance attendees are clients.
Superintendent Tab Brockman says the mission of Parks & Rec is to create a space for everyone to have fun and their holiday dances certainly fill that mission. He adds the cancellation of this year’s event is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all of their Christmas Dance participants. He says they look forward to the return of the popular dances to the Parks & Rec community calendar in 2022.
Trace Industries is a Hopkinsville non-profit day training center that offers vocational, life and social skills instruction for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
