A section of KY 126/Cobb Road in northern Trigg County that was closed due to a sinkhole has reopened to traffic.
As previously reported by the News Edge, District 1 spokesman Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced Wednesday afternoon Cobb Road was closed about 2 miles west of Cerulean and a little less than a mile east of Trigg-Caldwell County Line.
He said a contract mowing crew was working along the right-of-way Wednesday afternoon when one of the tractors broke through the surface. Todd said the crew discovered a hole created by the tractor at the edge of the pavement was a sinkhole about 8 feet deep.
According to Todd, District 1 engineers went to the site Thursday and determined the hole extended about 18 feet below the roadway. He says the area was excavated and engineers determined water had been filtering out around several large rocks in the bottom of the sinkhole, carrying material with it.
Todd says the area was backfilled with rock to allow it to drain without eroding under the roadway. He indicates engineers will be checking the site regularly for several weeks to look for signs of additional subsidence. Once the area has had time to settle, he says an asphalt cap will be placed on the site in a few months.
