With the Fifth Annual Hopkinsville Summer Salute set to begin Friday afternoon, motorists should be prepared for upcoming road closures in preparation for incoming and outgoing traffic.
Beginning at 5 p.m. this afternoon, the Hopkinsville Public Works Department will be closing West 9th Street, West 8th Street, portions of Bethel Street and moving South Main Street to single-lane only. Any southbound to westbound truck traffic will need to re-route and use West 4th Street as a detour to West 7th Street. And these closures and changes will remain in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
These changes come in the great anticipation of what could be a strong, and free, two-day summer festival for Hopkinsville, which returns this Friday and Saturday following a one-year COVID-19 hiatus.
At the heart of 2021 Summer Salute sits Saturday’s superstar headliner — two-time Grammy Award Winner and country music legend Travis Tritt — who will perform on the main stage near the Hopkinsville Justice Center at 7 p.m., following opening acts from Murray native Olivia Faye, as well as Kyle Daniel.
Tritt follows in a long line of country acts to star at Summer Salute, which includes Diamond Rio, Tracy Lawrence, Sawyer Brown and the late Joe Diffie.
Hopkinsville Parks & Recreation Superintendent Tab Brockman and his new Marketing and Events Coordinator Taylor Duke both noted that visitors from all over will be in town during the weekend.
Music certainly isn’t the festival’s only focus.
Kid’s Zone locations include bounce houses and rides for both young children and adolescents, as well as the popular “Kiddie Train” sponsored by Jennie Stuart Health.
There’s also a surprise new addition, as the festival continues to grow each year.
Craft vendors and food & beverage kiosks will be on site both Friday and Saturday, as will a large number of sanitation stations.
It is recommended for those feeling unwell to stay home due to COVID-19 concerns, and event-goers are encouraged to mask when not eating, if comfortable doing so.
