Alexander Perjury Trial Date Set for November 1

A trial date has been set in the perjury case involving a retired Hopkinsville police lieutenant as the court awaits a decision from the Kentucky Court of Appeals to see if the case will be dismissed.

Jefferson Alexander’s attorney, Eric Eaton, filed a motion last month asking the Court of Appeals to compel Christian Circuit Court Judge John Atkins to grant a motion to dismiss the case that was previously filed by another special prosecutor in the case.

Both Eaton and the current special prosecutor, Assistant Attorney General Jim Lesousky, appeared before Judge Atkins for a pretrial conference Wednesday. Lesousky said he is ready for the case to be scheduled for trial later this year as they await the ruling from the Court of Appeals.

Alexander was indicted by a grand jury in March 2019. He is accused of giving false testimony to a Christian County grand jury seven years earlier in the case against former Hopkinsville Councilwoman Ann Cherry. She was charged with official misconduct, tampering with a witness, and tampering with public records. As part of a plea agreement, Cherry resigned from her city council seat.

In 2017, the City of Hopkinsville settled a federal lawsuit filed by Cherry and agreed to pay her $150,000 but did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
