FBI Investigating Downtown Nashville Explosion

The Federal Bureau of Investigations has taken over the investigation into a Christmas morning explosion that resulted in major damage in downtown Nashville.

Nashville media outlets say the explosion occurred around 6:30 Friday morning.  The explosion was reportedly felt across most of Davidson County.  Officials say it has been linked to a vehicle that was outside 166 2nd Avenue North.

Metro Nashville Police told media during a news conference they think the explosion was intentional.  The FBI has taken over the lead in the investigation.  They are being assisted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Nashville Metro Police

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron told Newschannel 5 police received a report of a suspicious vehicle and upon investigating the report, officers called the hazardous devices unit. When the unit responded to the area, the vehicle exploded.

Three people were taken to the hospital, but officials say none of the injuries have been reported as critical.

Traffic to the downtown area has been restricted on Friday morning. An Emergency Operations Center has been activated in response to the explosion.
