Hopkinsville Parks and Rec Pick Special Christmas Tree Lighter

The Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department has announced a 7-year-old from Pembroke as the honorary 2020 Downtown Hopkinsville Christmas Tree-Lighter.

Parks and Recreation officials said Sylas Luxmore was nominated by his mother, Casey Carroll. She says Luxmore was very sick last Christmas and could barely walk, and hardly remembered his favorite holiday.

On January 2, Luxmore was diagnosed with leukemia — a form of cancer that attacks the blood and bones — and quickly began treatment.

“Sylas has the sparkle in his eyes as he talks about Christmas. His favorite part is putting up the Christmas tree,” exclaimed Carroll in her nomination. “Sylas has fought through this cancer every day for a year! He inspires me, shows me there is hope. Just like Sylas, our town too can overcome this pandemic and have hope for the future.”

They add in a year that has presented so much uncertainly and a plethora of unknowns, Luxmore is a beacon of inspiration, exudes positivity, and provides hope for a better tomorrow. His support team have adopted a motto of “His fight is my fight.”

Luxmore will be present for the virtual Downtown Hopkinsville Christmas Tree Lighting, scheduled for Friday evening, December 11 at 6:00. You can watch Luxmore flip the switch and officially kick off the holiday season by streaming the event live here.
