Kentucky Sees Highest Week of New COVID-19 Cases

Governor Andy Beshear said with Saturday’s new COVID-19 cases, this week is the single-highest week of cases reported in Kentucky since the pandemic began.

Governor Beshear confirmed Saturday afternoon 638 new positive COVID-19 cases, raising the statewide total to at least 38,930. Seventeen of the newly reported cases were from children age 5 and younger.

In addition, the governor confirmed 6 new deaths, making the death toll 810. The deaths include a 74-year old man from Graves County, an 89-year old man from McCracken County, two men and a woman from Jefferson County, and Nicholas County man. All of Saturday’s deaths were in people older than 55. 

As of Saturday, nearly 755,000 tests had been administered. The COVID-19 testing positive rate, based on a seven-day rolling average, taking into account total positive tests reported by laboratories divided by total tests reported by labs, stood at 5.45%. The number of Kentuckians who have recovered stood at 9,091.

Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the department for public health said Saturday we have to take the coronavirus seriously. He adds with every person who avoids crowds, wears a face-covering in public, maintains a social distance of at least six feet, and frequently washes their hands are making an essential and invaluable contribution in the ability to fight the pandemic.
