Motorists traveling in Trigg County need to be aware of a new work zone at the intersection of U.S. 68 and Kentucky 139/South Road at the south edge of Cadiz beginning Thursday.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd says the work zone is to allow construction of an R-Cut at the intersection, sometimes referred to as a J-Turn. He adds the safety project will initially start with work zone signage and pavement markings on Thursday, followed by a traffic shift to establish two-way traffic on U.S. 68 on Friday.

According to Todd, the traffic shift is to facilitate the construction of curbing, drainage features, and the controlled U-turn cross overs along U.S. 68 for each end of the R-Cut.

This comes after engineers with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet met with Trigg County Fiscal Court in February to provide an outline of efforts to enhance safety at the intersection with the R-cut installations determined to be the most-effective way to curb crashes.

During the project development process, Todd says the design team reviewed 15 years of crash data at the intersection that has been the site of over 30 police-reported crashes, including four fatalities, eleven injuries. and nineteen crashes with property damage.

Construction of the new $1.2 million R-Cut safety project is expected to take about 12 weeks with a target completion date of October 30.
