Judge Moves Trigg Murder Suspect’s Trial Date To December

The trial date for a Hopkinsville man accused of a fatal shooting in November 2018 in Trigg County was rescheduled at a pretrial conference Wednesday afternoon.

James Gentry is charged with complicity to murder, first-degree robbery, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. Gentry was arrested by state police after Joey Hayes of Hopkinsville was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a hay barn located on Buffalo Road in Trigg County on November 28, 2018.

Gentry’s defense attorney, Michael Thompson, expressed his concerns to Trigg County Circuit Court Judge C.A. “Woody” Woodall about only being a month away from the trial date and not having all of the forensics back. Commonwealth’s Attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins said she had checked on the lab results Wednesday morning and they are still pending. Thompson added even if they had the lab results, it’s doubtful the Kentucky Supreme Court would allow jury trials to begin in August. He then asked Judge Woodall if they could reschedule the August trial to a later date. Judge Woodall agreed and set the trial to begin on December 10th.

Thompson then asked Judge Woodall to consider releasing Gentry on home incarceration with an ankle monitor until his trial date.

Judge Woodall said he has considered Thompson’s motion, but due to the seriousness of Gentry’s charges, he is denying the motion for a change of bond conditions.

Judge Woodall scheduled another pretrial conference in the case for the afternoon of October 14th at 1:30.
