The Kentucky Historic Properties Advisory Commission voted Friday to remove the Jefferson Davis statue from the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort.

The vote was 11-1 in favor of removing the statue and moving it to the Jefferson Davis State Historic Site in Todd County.

During the comments portion of the meeting, board member Cathy Thomas said she can’t find a lot of reasons to honor Davis the way that he was.

Board member Jon Park asked the question why the board suddenly had a change of heart to remove the statue and asked where does this end.

Brandon Wilson, who cast the lone nay vote, says the government needs to get out of the statue business altogether.

Wilson also believes Governor Andy Beshear is trying to politicize things by asking the commission to vote a certain way.

Before casting a vote, Park brought up a quote from Davis.

He adds when considering a statue to replace Davis in the rotunda, they should consider Former Kentucky Attorney General John Marshall Harlan.

In a statement released after the historic vote, Governor Beshear says it was past time for the vote and for this action. He adds this will get us a little closer to truly being Team Kentucky.
