Committee Hears Process For Filling Ward 6 Seat Vacancy

At the Hopkinsville Committee of the Whole meeting Thursday night, City Attorney Doug Willen outlined the process for filling the Ward 6 council seat vacancy.

Willen said when councilman Wendell Lynch is sworn-in as mayor this weekend the Ward 6 seat will become vacant.

Based on a resolution from 2008, he presented the process and the tentative timeline in order for City Council to select someone to fill the vacancy before March 24.

Willen notes the replacement will be for the remainder of the term.

Lynch was appointed as mayor by Hopkinsville City Council on February 18. He will be sworn-in by his brother, retired Christian District Judge Arnold Lynch at a ceremony Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the War Memorial Building in downtown Hopkinsville.

Lynch will serve as mayor until the end of this year. That will leave two years in the unexpired term of former Mayor Carter Hendricks, who resigned in January after he accepted the executive director position with the South West Kentucky Economic Development Council. According to state law, candidates will be nominated by the Democratic and Republican parties to run in a special election in November to fill the remainder of the term.
