Bill Banning Sanctuary Policies Goes to KY House

A bill banning the enforcement of sanctuary policies is heading to the House for consideration following state Senate approval yesterday.

The Federal Immigration Cooperation Act of 2020, designated Senate Bill 1, passed the state Senate in a 28-10 vote yesterday. The SB 1 designation signifies the bill’s priority status as assigned by Senate majority leadership.

The legislation would prohibit law enforcement and other public officials from enforcing sanctuary policies. It would also require law enforcement and other public agencies to use their best efforts and resources to support the enforcement of federal immigration law.

SB 1 sponsors say the bill is a preemptive measure and is not a statement on immigration policy. They add the focus is on law enforcement having the tools they need to do their job.

The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
