A special prosecutor is being requested to determine if Dayton Jones is required to register as a sex offender following his release from prison.
Christian County Attorney John Soyars says the crime of failing to register as a sex offender is ultimately prosecuted in circuit court by the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Soyars adds with the recent circumstances involving Christian County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling, his office would not be the appropriate prosecutorial agency to interpret the document which resulted in the release of Jones from prison. Therefore, the Office of the Christian County Attorney has contacted the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office and requested the appointment of a special prosecutor.
All of this comes after Soyars’ office was notified by Kentucky State Police that Jones had not registered with the Kentucky Sex Offenders Registry.
Jones was released from prison late last year by former Governor Matt Bevin, but there was confusion from the document Bevin issued as to whether he was pardoned or his sentence was commuted. Soyars adds it is unclear if Jones is a registered sex offender or not.
Convicted sex offenders are typically assisted by the Department of Corrections in registering upon their release from incarceration.
