Coaches Say New Playoff System Comes Up Short

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association is introducing a new postseason playoff format for football that goes in effect this season and coaches are not enamored with the changes.

Hopkinsville High School Coach Craig Clayton and Christian County High School Coach Steve Lovelace spoke during the Hopkinsville Rotary Club meeting Tuesday afternoon and addressed the new rule directly. The new format has first and second round playoff games contested within each district, rather than the traditional cross-bracketing against another district. The most controversial change, however, is the decision to use a computer formula — a Ratings Power Index (RPI) — for determining the third and fourth round opponents and sites.

Coach Lovelace expressed his discontentment with the new rule.

Clayton echoed his opinion of the rule, adding his idea of a better system.
