Hopkinsville City Council approved an amendment to the WINS budget to include a funding adjustment for Phase 2 of the Greenway project, which includes extending the trail with a bridge over Lafayette Road and Country Club Lane. The cost of the Greenway Phase 2 project changed from $3.3 million to $3.7 million which pushed the total amended WINS budget to $12.3 million from just over $12 million.

Development Services Director Steve Bourne presented the Greenway Phase 2 project that includes a bridge over Country Club Lane and Lafayette Road, extending the existing trail from Pardue Lane to Foston Chapel Road. He added the project does not include what is referred to as ‘the pit’.

Mayor Carter Hendricks noted the addition of the bridge in the Greenway project is due to concerns of public safety at the busy intersection.

Chief Financial Officer Robert Martin explained the sources of funding for the Greenway expansion would come from money not used on other WINS projects, grants, and in-kind donations.

In other business, council members approved the appointment of Hopkinsville Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Futrell as interim fire chief until a replacement for former chief Freddie Montgomery who retired at the end of the July. Mayor Hendricks says the process of selecting a fire chief is underway. He says they will be meeting Wednesday to review the applications that have passed the initial screening.

Council members also approved incentives for Michael Venable Insurance Agency for proposed office property located at 1107 South Virginia Street for an estimated investment of $337,000.
