Emergency management officials around the area are participating in a statewide exercise surrounding a catastrophic earthquake on the New Madrid Fault.
Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham tells the News Edge the ‘Shaken Fury 2019’ is a nationwide earthquake exercise that revolves around the New Madrid Fault zone.
He says the state gave a scenario for the second day after a January 30th earthquake that affects Christian County and involves a large power outage.
When asked if Christian County is prepared for a catastrophic earthquake, Graham says no one is ever totally prepared for that but they do have several plans in place.
Regardless if it’s a tornado, ice storms, or any other major weather-related event, he notes you always need to be prepared and have a plan, practice that plan, and have an emergency kit. He says FEMA always teaches you to be prepared to take care of yourself for the first 72 hours because in a widespread catastrophic event it may take emergency responders that long to get to you.
