Council Approves Lateral Officer Hiring Incentives For HPD

Hopkinsville City Council approved the police officer hiring incentive policy and a Land and Water Conservation Grant for Pardue Lane Park which were forwarded from the April Committee of the Whole meeting.

At Tuesday night’s meeting, City Attorney Doug Willen stated he had made a few tweaks to the Police Officer Lateral Hire Incentive Policy based on their request at the Committee of the Whole meeting.

The policy offers a new hire sign-on award of up to $9,000 pre-tax that may be paid to Certified Police Officers after completion of their six months probationary period with the city.

Council members also unanimously approved a Land and Water Conservation Grant to use toward the construction of two group shelters and a playground on the Pardue Lane Park site for a total cost estimated at $150,000 with a $75,000 cash match from the grant matching fund for the project.

In other business, council members approved the second reading of rezoning 1.45 acres of property on Skyline Drive at the intersection of East 9th Street and Skyline Drive and Park View Drive from a Residential District to a General Business District.

In addition, council approved the reappointment of Jim Monroe to the City of Hopkinsville Code of Ethics Board as well as Cornelia Belle and Jim King as alternate members; Julie Zieman Davis’ appointment to the Board of Directors of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Conference Center Corporation (James E. Bruce Convention Center) for the unexpired term of Austin Moss; and, Twyla Parris’ appointment to the Hopkinsville Public Transportation Advisory Committee to fill the unexpired term of Vonda Gates.

Council also recognized Hopkinsville High School student, Bryce Robinson, for achieving a perfect score of 36 on the ACT, and council recognized the Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority for awards they recently received. General Manager Derrick Watson informed council HWEA received the Drinking Water Award in April, Leslie Rogers was named Water Treatment Plant Operator of the Year and HWEA received the Outstanding Water Plant Award in the entire state of Kentucky.
