Voluntary Curbside Recycling Ordinance Approved By Council

The first reading of an ordinance establishing a voluntary curbside recycling program for city residents was approved by Hopkinsville City Council during Thursday night’s meeting.

During public comments, President/CEO of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Chamber of Commerce Kelli Pendleton voiced her support of the recycling program and said it has been a goal of their Community Vision Plan.

Mayor Carter Hendricks also voiced his support for curbside recycling.

Curbside recycling is voluntary and limited to residential customers who register to receive a recycling container for $5.50 a month per household. The monthly fee will appear on the customer’s garbage collection billing statement, and the containers will be picked up the same day as the trash is collected.

City Clerk Missy Upton read the items that can and cannot be placed in the recycling containers.

Councilman Paul Henson thanked Solid Waste for stepping up and taking this chance. He said the only way the curbside recycling is going to be successful is if the public knows about the program.

The ordinance was approved by an 11-0 vote. Councilman Jimmy Dossett was absent from the meeting.
