UPDATE: The child critically injured in a head-on collision on Pond River Road that claimed the lives of his mother and another woman this week has died from his injuries. Kentucky State Police report 11-year old Peyton Baker of Elkton succumbed to his injuries Thursday.

Two Todd County women were killed in a head-on collision on Pond River Road Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Coroner Mike Tino-Cunniffe identified the victims as the driver, 32- year old Janine Watzke and passenger, 30-year old Julie Powell, both of Allegre. He says they were pronounced dead on the scene. Tino-Cunniffee reports a juvenile in the back-seat of the vehicle was critically injured. He was airlifted to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville.

KSP Post 2 in Madisonville received the call about the fatal crash in the 2800 block of Pond River Road in Elkton around 1:40 p.m. Police report the preliminary investigation revealed 25-year old Zachary Cannon of Elkton was driving a SUV northbound and for an unknown reason ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, and crashed head-on into the car driven by Watzke. Police say Cannon was flown to Skyline Hospital in Nashville for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

State Police are continuing to investigate the fatal wreck.
