A Hopkinsville man was flown to a Nashville hospital after a bad wreck on South Main Street Thursday afternoon.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 1:45 between East 16th and East 17th streets. Police report 44-year old Maria Rivera of Hopkinsville was driving southbound in the right lane following a GPS application on her phone when it told her to turn left. Rivera stated she didn’t see any vehicles and merged into the left lane where she collided with a pickup truck driven by 46-year old James Jackson, causing his truck to crash into a utility pole.

According to the report, eyewitnesses said it appeared Rivera was making a left turn from the right lane and that Jackson was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.

Police say Jackson suffered a severe compound fracture to his right ankle and was transported by ambulance to Jennie Stuart Medical Center and then flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Rivera was taken by ambulance to Jennie Stuart Medical Center for treatment of neck and shoulder pain.
