McConnell’s Remarks About Justice Kennedy Retirement

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made remarks on the Senate floor Wednesday following the announcement from Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy that he will retire July 31.

Senator McConnell expressed his gratitude for Justice Kennedy’s service on the federal bench for over four decades and his defense of the First Amendment.

He noted judges must interpret the law fairly and apply it even-handedly. McConnell said judicial decisions must not flow from judges’ personal philosophies or preferences, but from the honest assessment of the words and actual meaning of the law.

McConnell concluded his remarks on the Senate Floor by stating they look forward to yet another outstanding selection.
