Governor Matt Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff Friday in honor of a Kentucky soldier who was captured and killed during the Korean War.

According to the Department of Defense, 19-year old Corporal Ernest L.R. Heilman of Greenup was a member of the Battery B, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was declared missing in action on February 13, 1951 near Hoengson, South Korea.

Cpl. Heilman’s name is recorded on the Courts of the Missing at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, along with other MIAs from the Korean War. He was accounted for on August 19, 2016 and a rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate this.

Cpl. Heilman will be buried June 8, 2018 in Arlington National Cemetery.

Governor Bevin encourages all individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute of lowering the flag in honor of Cpl. Heilman.
