A Hopkinsville man is facing drug trafficking and possession charges after police reportedly pulled over a vehicle with an expired registration tag.

Hopkinsville Police report the traffic stop occurred shortly after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday night at the intersection of Blooming Grove Road and North Main Street. Officers say the driver, 33-year old Charlie Fields was visibly nervous and his hands were shaking and he had trouble focusing on finding an insurance card. Police ran his license which showed it was expired. Officers say when Fields got out of the car and was asked if there were any drugs in the vehicle he hesitated and then replied no. Police say Fields then admitted to throwing a marijuana roach out of the vehicle on Blooming Grove Road.

The report says a K-9 unit then did a free air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to illegal drugs. During a search of the vehicle, police reportedly found eleven Percocet pills in a white plastic container, four 1/4 Xanax bars in a plastic bag with a piece of an unknown pill, along with a total of more than 15 ounces of marijuana and digital scales.

Fields was booked into the Christian County Jail charged with 1st Degree Trafficking in a Controlled Substance (Less Than 10 Dosage Units Opiates), Trafficking in Marijuana (8 Ounces to Less Than 5 Pounds), 3rd Degree Possession of a Controlled Substance – Drug Unspecified, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and vehicle and insurance related offenses.
