Republican candidates for Christian County Sheriff may have similarities in their training and background in law enforcement. However, they differed in their views on the independence of the Christian County Jail from the office they seek to occupy during Monday night’s debate.

Perennial candidate Chuck Inman—who ran for sheriff in 2006, 2010, and 2014—says he would be in favor of legislation transferring the jail’s responsibilities and staff to the sheriff’s office.

Though Section 105 of the Kentucky Constitution permits such a consolidation, Hopkinsville Police Lieutenant Tyler DeArmond says he would not be in favor of such a combination.

The pair also diverged on how they would best allocate department resources to deal with demand and reduce call wait time. DeArmond says more deputies need to be assigned to a particular part of the county.

Though it was not clear as to what Inman meant by a “contract for private law enforcement,” he did add he would emphasize specialization to avoid reliance on outside agencies.Speaking to other challenges, DeArmond mentioned the status of public retirement pensions and the impact that could have.

In contrast, Inman says he is more concerned about the state’s budget. He also proposed a novel idea to keep citizens and the media informed about the actions of the department: an interactive webpage.
